It represents the cultural, informational, social and communicational meeting point of individuals, groups, local communities, cultural institutions and organizations. MKL is a library of the Slovenian capital (280.000 inhabitants) which performs its activities for the residents of Ljubljana as well as its visitors. Library has 36 branches and Mobile Library with 46 bus stops. MKL is also the regional library of the central Slovenia region and performs tasks of regionality for 8 libraries.
Our important services:
- The Pionirska – Centre for Youth Literature and Librarianship is a leading professional institution in the field of youth librarianship, in which rich tradition has been gathered, and new approaches to spreading quality children and youth literature are being explored. The Centre cooperates with youth departments of all our libraries, with public and school libraries across Slovenia as well as with professional public, and operates also in the international environment.
- Slovanska library – the Centre for Local Materials and Specialized Humanistic Sciences – collects materials about the local community.
- With our virtual library and the use of new technologies we are keeping track of development and are offering on-line services as well as electronic sources that are available to users twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Visitors may reserve materials by the use of the My Library service, use our electronic collections through remote access, use our e-materials in the educational processes, or seek additional knowledge by the use of our recommended on-line addresses, reserve a library computer, use the Ask the Librarian service, or follow us at various social networks to keep in touch with developments in our libraries.
In 2013 we prepared and organized 2.300 events and 1.300 different learning activities (courses or workshops); all events are free of charge for end users. We organise various learning activities for users with special needs, for immigrants, unemployed, job seekers etc. Most of learning activity are organised in Center of Lifelong learning, which is responsible for training of users from all age groups, staff and wider professional public. It consists of:
- The Employment Information Service (EIS), aimed at job seekers, gathers, actualizes and provides information on labour markets in Slovenia, the European Union and other countries.
- The Learning Exchange is the information center collecting, managing and mediating information from the people who offer knowledge to those that are searching for it.
- At the Centre for autonomous learning we have made available adjusted materials, modern educational technology and professional help from librarians, advisers and mentors.
- At Points of lifelong learning there are carried out tutoring and organized education for adults who need informal, free and autonomous learning.
